COUGARS NAMED TO AREA/ALL DISTRICT TEAMS

Several Clark Cougars from this year’s fall athletic seasons were peppered throughout the Express-News’ annual recognitions of local players. 28-5A All District Teams were also named in volleyball (Clark football All District awards were released earlier and can be found here). The varsity football team finished #2 in the area rankings after a 13-1 season which took them to the state quarterfinals. They were #1 in the KSAT 12 rankings and #10 in the Associated Press (AP) rankings.
CROSS COUNTRY AT STATE MEET

Congratulations to Shantel Swift and David Scorcelletti as they represented Clark at the State Cross Country meet. It was hot, hilly and the competition fierce, but an experience they will never forget. A huge thanks to the Cougarettes and Drum Line and everyone who participated in their send off on Friday. THRICE IS NICE AS COOGS GET READY FOR DISTRICT

Clark’s Varsity teams both fared well with 3rd place finishes at the NISD meet on Saturday, October 10th. Twenty five teams covered the course at Hardin Athletic Complex on a cool, overcast morning. Shantel Swift (12:31) was 2nd in the 2 mile girls race and Glynnis Meade was 4th (12:36). Rounding out the team scoring were Mel Schwartz (13:31), Shaneve Swift (13:36), and Katherine Ritchie (13:42). The boys team were led by 5th/6th place David Scorcelletti (16:41) and Austin Wells (16:42) for the 3 mile course. Jose Sierra (17:15), Ryan Pavlich (17:29), and Jim Wells (18:21) were next in for the Cougars. Pictures of the Varsity and JV races can be found at http://clarkcrosscountry2009.shutterfly.com/.
The JV teams will be at the Central Catholic Relays on Wednesday, and Varsity will travel to Seguin on Saturday. Countdown to District – 3 weeks!

The Clark Varsity Cross Country teams headed back to a much dryer Brooks City Base course this week for the Ricardo Romo (UTSA) meet. They were entered in the Gold Division, which is open to all schools, not just 5A, which makes for a very competitive field.

The Clark Cougar Cross Country team headed to Brooks City Base on Saturday for the NEISD meet. The rain held off until the middle of the Varsity boys race, and from then on, the course was a muddy mess. Congrats to the Varsity boys for finishing 7th out of 29 schools, only a few points behind O’Connor for the 3 mile course! The team was led by David Scorcelletti, 16:55 and Jose Sierra, 17:05, followed by James Leopold, 17:43, Austin Wells, 17:50, Ryan Pavlich, 17:52, John Bodkin, 18:47 and Devon Gonzales, 18:48.
CROSS COUNTRY STARTS SEASON – SORT OF…

With the first meet of the season canceled by weather (curiously), Coach Ager and the Clark Cougar Varsity team invited the Warren Warriors over to familiar ground – the Clark cross country course. Finishing 1st and 2nd for the girls 2 mile were Shantel Swift (12:43) and Glynnis Meade (12:44), followed by teammates Stacey Wilkins (13:45), Melanie Schwartz (14:13) and Shaneve Swift (14:14). The boys were led by David Scorcelletti (16:44) and Jose Sierra (16:45), finishing 2nd and 3rd overall, followed by Austin Wells (17:16), James Leopold (17:33) and Ryan Pavlich (18:20) for the 3 mile course.

COUGAR ACCELERATES IN NATIONAL MEET

Sam Perez, a varsity Clark track athlete, participated in the AAU National Track and Field meet at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa this week. He placed 42nd out of 65 athletes (Young Men’s division) in the 800m run prelims with a time of 2:04. The top 12 moved on to the Finals. He reached the meet by qualifying 2nd in the Regional meet with a time of 2:01.74. He placed 18th at Regionals in the 400m with a time of 54.10.
Others Cougars participating in Regionals:
Shantel Swift, 2nd in the 400m, 58.81; 7th in the 800m, 2:28.62; 1st in Long Jump, 17ft, 11 inches; 2nd in Triple Jump, 36 feet (Intermediate division) but was unable to attend the National meet
Morgan Thomas, tied for 3rd in Pole Vault, 13 feet (Young Men’s division)

COUGARS COMPETE AT REGIONAL TRACK MEET

Clark’s varsity track season ended with the Region IV track meet held Friday and Saturday at Alamo Stadium. Shantel Swift and Hayden Greenbauer highlighted individual accomplishments in the finals with Shantel taking 4th place in the girls 800M, while Hayden did the same in the boys 110M hurdles. The girls 1600M relay team also took 4th place. The boys 1600m relay team dropped almost 2 seconds to set a PR with several boys turning in their best splits ever, but fell just short of making the finals placing 9th overall (a significant improvement from their 18th place seeding prior to the meet).
CLARK TRACK SUCCESSFUL AT REGIONAL QUALIFIER

Clark’s track athletes who qualified for Regionals traveled to Fredericksburg this Friday to participate in the Regional Qualifiers Track Meet. This meet acts as a warm-up to the Regional Track Meet on May 1st and 2nd. Gusty winds made for interesting times as sometimes they helped and other times they hindered. Clark’s Varsity girls and boys did well, with the following results.
