CLARK SOPHOMORES PITCH SHUTOUT

by on Oct.03, 2009, under Football

The Clark Cougar sophomore football team remained undefeated after a dominating display over the Jay Mustangs, 42-0. Several players combined for the 6 touchdowns, highlighted by long runs by Michael Vasquez (#45) and Malcolm Eatman (#41). Quarterback Nick Coons (#7) scored twice, Alex Ethridge (#24) scored on an interception return for the second consecutive week, and Dusty Wright (#27) punched in a short run for the final score.
Both the offensive and defensive lines dominated the lines of scrimmage. The offense was able to gain yardage at will through the air and on the ground, netting well over 150 yards. The defense continued its stingy play, only allowing 4 first downs while making several tackles behind the line of srimmage.
Next game is against arch rival O’Connor next Thursday.

CLARK JV FOOTBALL ROLLS JAY

Alex Nichols returns kickoff for TD

Alex Nichols returns kickoff for TD

In one of the stranger games of the season, the Clark Cougar JV football whipped the John Jay Mustangs, 28-12.  The first half was relatively calm, as both teams turned the ball over, defense dominated and Jay was able to put together a drive ending in a TD with a failed extra point.  At the half, Jay led 6-0.

Then there was the second half.

Clark received the kickoff and returned it to midfield.  On the following play, Austin Wise pulled in a Sean Campbell pass and would rumble for a 30 yd. gain to the Jay 23.  Deandre Holmes would then find the end zone for the score and a Ty Williams PAT would give the Cougars a 7-6 lead early in the 3rd quarter.  On the next Jay possession, Renee Quintanilla would recover a fumble.  After three quarters, Clark would lead 7-6.

Say that five times!

The Cougar Cross Country teams finally got to run the Judson meet after it was delayed a week due to – what else – rain!  The normally dry creek bed had enough water to make things a bit tricky as it was crossed several times.  Varsity Boys finished strong with David Scorcelletti, Jose Sierra and Austin Wells finishing 2nd, 4th and 11th, followed by Ryan Pavlich, Harry MacTough, Matt Bastoni and Devon Gonzales.  Glynnis Meade and Shantel Swift led the Varsity Girls, placing 2nd and 4th.  Next in were Stacey Wilkins, Shaneve Swift, Katherine Ritchie and Mel Schwartz.  Both Varsity teams placed 3rd.  The Girls JV team was 5th and Boys JV were 11th.
The Varsity team travels to Round Rock on Saturday, Oct 3rd for the McNeil Invitational.  They will run in the Gold division, which is a 5k for both teams.  Check out our puddle spashing pictures at http://clarkcrosscountry2009.shutterfly.com/.

A GREAT REASON TO SKIP WORK

18th Hole at Oak Hills

18th Hole at Oak Hills

Each year, the Clark Athletic Booster Club provides volunteers for the AT&T Championship PGA golf tournament at the Oak Hills Country Club. This year it’s Oct. 21-22 for Clark Cougar volunteers.   It’s a great day of walking the course with the Senior tour players and enjoying a PGA tournament. The result is thousands of dollars for our student-athletes. If you’d like to help, please contact Heidi Lentz or Sam Guido.

Volunteers do not have to be Clark parents so take a friend, enjoy the course and help earn money in a relaxing way for the Clark Cougars.  Thanks to volunteers from last year, our students have received over $20,000 so far this year, which has been used for everything from uniforms to new mascot costumes.

COUGARS FEAST ON RAM CHOPS

With a 4-0 record, the Cougars made sure they were not one of the weekend upsets, blowing out the Marshall Rams in a 41-7 victory.  Both the offense and defense dominated early, allowing 2nd units for both to come in and see action with three minutes left in the first half.

Marshall received the opening kickoff and drove into Clark territory but Jacob Garcia made his second interception of the year to give the Cougars the ball on the Clark 18 early in the first quarter.  The Cougars would then drive the field, ending in a Ryan Jones 3 yd. rushing TD with 8:41 left in the 1st quarter.  It would be the first of two in the 1st quarter for Jones, as he ran again for a 7 yd. TD with 2:08 left in the quarter.

With the defense taking control of the Marshall offense, the Cougars would get the ball back and would score again early in the 2nd quarter, set up by a 20 yd. run by  Joey Cammer.  Hayden Greenbauer added another 28 yds. on the same drive to set up a 6 yd. TD by Greenbauer with 7:46 in the 2nd quarter.  On the following Marshall possession, Ryan Flournoy would get his 1st interception of the season along with a nice run after the catch.  Jones would be called on once again, this time for 26 yds. and a TD giving the Cougars a 27-0 lead in the 2nd quarter.  Andrew Mire picked off a Marshall pass in the end zone and Tevin Glasgow would add one more score before the half on a spectacular 63 yd. dash to the end zone, giving the Cougars a 34-0 lead at halftime.

COUGARS MOVING TO A NEW DISTRICT?

by on Sep.26, 2009, under Football

With the challenge of new schools, overcrowded districts and explosive growth all over the state of Texas, the UIL has released a study that would split football into two distinct divisions. In the proposal, which has not been adopted by the UIL, Clark would be in Division 1 District 15 with Jay, O’Connor, Southwest, Del Rio, Stevens, Taft and Warren.  The change would only affect football.

For more info, take a look at the UIL draft here.
