Alex Nichols returns kickoff for TD

In one of the stranger games of the season, the Clark Cougar JV football whipped the John Jay Mustangs, 28-12.  The first half was relatively calm, as both teams turned the ball over, defense dominated and Jay was able to put together a drive ending in a TD with a failed extra point.  At the half, Jay led 6-0.

Then there was the second half.

Clark received the kickoff and returned it to midfield.  On the following play, Austin Wise pulled in a Sean Campbell pass and would rumble for a 30 yd. gain to the Jay 23.  Deandre Holmes would then find the end zone for the score and a Ty Williams PAT would give the Cougars a 7-6 lead early in the 3rd quarter.  On the next Jay possession, Renee Quintanilla would recover a fumble.  After three quarters, Clark would lead 7-6.

Clark would stall on their next drive, ending in a punt.  Jay attempted to field the ball at their own 15.  The receiver got a hand on the ball but Alex Hunter grabbed it out of his hands and ran to the end zone.  Officials ruled that Clark could not advance the ball and gave Clark the ball on the Jay 20.  On the next play, Clark fumbled and Jay returned it the length of the field for a 12-7 lead with about 7 minutes left in the game.  Clark’s Alex Nichols fielded the ensuing kickoff and ran through the Jay defenders for a touchdown, giving Clark a 14-12 lead following the extra point. Taylor St. Charles would add another TD with 15 yd. reception with 3 minutes left. Jay would get the ball back then give it up again on a fumble.  Brian Socha would carry the pigskin across the goal line on a 20 yd. run, giving the Cougars the final TD in a 28-12 victory.

The JV record is now 5-1, 4-0 in district play.

Sophomores whip’em 42-0.  Story to follow.
