Cougar Defense smothers Rams

The 2009 Clark Cougars varsity football team continued their historic run with a 35-14 beat down over the Del Rio Rams in the third round of the playoffs.  The win ties the most wins by a Clark team and is the best consecutive win record ever.

A tried and true Cougar formula, pound the ball down their opponents throats, once again was the winning recipe along with a stifling rush defense.  Behind Ryan Jones rushing and a Glenn Bonner 22 yd. reception, the Cougars marched down the field.  Hayden Greenbauer started the scoring on a 29 yd. run after Clark’s first possession with 2:28 left in the 1st qtr.

Clark struck again quickly in the 2nd qtr., making it 14-0 after Tevin Glasgow, who had 97 yds. rushing for the night, took a 1 yd. dive over the embattled Del Rio defense.  The defense set up the third score of the half.  With Del Rio driving into Clark territory, Joey Cammer demolished the Del Rio quarterback as he was attempting to pass and John Manders recovered a fumble to give the Cougars the ball.  A 4 yd. run by Glasgow with 4:13 before the half gave Clark a 21-0 halftime lead.

The 2nd half was more of the same.  On Clark’s second possession, Ryan Jones broke loose with a 70 yd. run from the Clark 23 yd. line.  One play later, Greenbauer carried it over the goal line for a 28-0 3rd qtr. lead.  When Clark got the ball back, Tevin Glasgow would eat up most of the yardage before another Greenbauer TD to give the Cougars a commanding 35-0 lead after three quarters.

Del Rio scored 2 TDs in the 4th as Clark emptied the bench.  Jones and Greenbauer rushed for over 100 yds. each and Glasgow was three yds. short of the 100 mark.  The Rams had ZERO rushing yds. in the first half and were held to only 98 yds. total rushing, including a 56 yd. run by Del Rio against the Clark reserves.  It is the 8th time this season the Clark defense has held a team under 100 yds. rushing.  The final score: Clark 35 Del Rio 14.

Clark now moves on to the Region IV championship game against Austin Westlake.  The game will be next Saturday at 2:00 at either Heroes stadium or Texas State in San Marcos depending on the outcome of the Brandeis game.
