T. Wood and E. Bergman reject Huskies

The Clark Cougars varsity volleyball team, led by a tenacious offense and an unforgiving defense, harassed the Holmes Huskies and walked away with a 3-0 match and victory.  Game 1 for the Cougars looked grim as they fell behind 3-7, 11-16 and 18-21 before stormin’ back for the win.  Senior Kate Mazzocco served an ace to tie the game at 21.  India Hartwell followed with a kill and the Cougars didn’t look back on their way to a 25-21 victory.

Game 2 was much easier as the Cougars put the Huskies away early 25-16.  Game 3 was tied at 19-19. The Cougars then went on a run that included another kill by Hartwell  followed immediately by a kill from Kayla Jarzombek and a tap by Claire Webster.  The final score was 25-20.

The Cougars are now 14-15 on the year and 6-2 at the end of the 1st half of district.

CLARK FB SOPHOMORES REMAIN UNDEFEATED

by on Sep.25, 2009, under Football

On another muddy field, the Clark Sophomore team won a hard fought battle with the Southwest Dragons, slaying them with a 26-6 victory. Clark struck first with quarterback Nick Coons (#7) scoring on a short quarterback sneak and Alex Etheridge (#24) returning an interception for another score. After a Southwest score, the Clark defense took over with a swarming defense in the second half, including a goal line stance that resulted in an end zone fumble recovery for a touchback. The offensive line also took over with key blocks to allow two long TD runs by Etheridge to ice the game.

Overall, another great team effort. Next up is the Jay Mustangs.

COUGARS JV WHIP UP ON RAMS

#21 Kweku Larbie runs for more

The Clark Cougar JV football team made lambs out of the Rams in football action.  Playing before fans at Farris Stadium, it started slow for the Cougars as they went three and out in their first possession.  The Rams then took over and drove to the Cougar 18 before the defense made a stand and stopped the Rams on downs.  It would be the Rams best last effort as the rest of the evening was all Cougars.  #46 Kenneth Harvey recovered a Marshall fumble with less than three minutes left in the 1st half.  A 19 yd Troy Ogletree pass to #83 Stephen Cram, followed by a 10 yd run by #40 Brian Socha set up the Cougars for a touchdown by Socha from 2 yds. just before the half .

In the third quarter, the Cougars would add six more with a 2 yd. rushing TD by #21 Kweku Larbie.  #41 Chris Miller also had a 41 yd. punt return in the 3rd to give the Cougars great field position.  #23 Deandre Holmes would score once more for Clark on a 25 yd. burst around the left side for the final TD, giving the Cougars the victory and a 4-1 record and a undefeated district record.  The final: Clark JV 18 – Marshall JV 0.

At Mike Robbins Field, the sophomores took on Southwest and dominated them, winning 26-6.  Congratulations, COOGS!

Meade and Swift lead the pack

Meade and Swift lead the pack

The Clark Varsity Cross Country teams headed back to a much dryer Brooks City Base course this week for the Ricardo Romo (UTSA) meet.  They were entered in the Gold Division, which is open to all schools, not just 5A, which makes for a very competitive field.

The girls were again led by Shantel Swift, 8th (11:59) and Glynnis Meade, 11th (12:01) out of 192 runners for the 2 mile course, and were the fastest of all the NISD entrants.  The team placed 13th out of 29 teams, the highest place for any of the NISD teams entered, and just ahead of District rival Brandeis.  Shaneve Swift (13:07), Katherine Ritchie (13:18), and Mel Schwartz (13:24) also contributed to the team score.
The boys placed 17th out of 28 teams, with David Scorcelletti (16:21) placing 34th and Jose Sierra (16:40) 44th out of 204 entrants for their 3 mile race.  Next in for Clark were James Leopold (17:09), Austin Wells (17:21) and John Bodkin (19:05).
Both the Varsity and JV teams will be at the Judson meet on Wednesday, September 23rd.  For pictures of today’s meet, see http://clarkcrosscountry2009.shutterfly.com.

One of the best to ever play volleyball at Clark, and now a key member of the Texas A&M squad, Mary Batis is up for a special recognition.  The UIL is celebrating 100 years of existence and is conducting a contest of the 100 greatest players ever.  Batis is nominated about five down on the list and you can only vote once (unless, of course, you vote on different computers).  COUGAR NATION, rise up, support one of our own  and let’s vote her to the All-Century team.  You can vote here.  Voting continues through Oct. 31.

COUGAR JV FOOTBALL FINISHES FALCONS

by on Sep.17, 2009, under Football

Yates TD catch, Cougars win

Yates TD catch, Cougars win

The Clark Cougar JV football team beat the Stevens Falcons 22-16 in a close game.  Deandre Holmes started the scoring for the Cougars, with a dive into the end zone in the 1st quarter.  Brandon Yates also scored on a nice reception from Sean Campbell and Howlett Cohick added six with a run down the sideline in front of the Stevens bench.  Stevens made a late drive in the final 2 minutes of the game but a diving interception by Evan Meyer (or the other 45?) killed the Falcon comeback and secured the victory for the Cougars.  The Cougar defense also tacked on a safety during the game.

The Sophomore team did not play, due to the fact that Stevens allegedly did not have enough players to field a team.  What looked like 100 players suited out for the Falcons JV game.

SHOWDOWN FOR THE CROWN

Clark vs. Stevens on 930 AM

Clark vs. Stevens on 930 AM

The Clark-Stevens game will be on Newstalk KLUP-AM 930, the Loop! this Friday evening.  The game pits the largest high school in our district, Stevens, against our Clark Cougars, who are 3-0 on the season.  Most prognosticators think this could be the game that determines the district title.  Be sure to show up for Homecoming and be ready to get rowdy.  GO COOGS!

The game is broadcast by the good folks at Texas Sports Radio Network (TSRN) and this week’s announcers are Bobby Stautzenberger and most likely Tony Franklin.
