O-Line hammers away at Mules

Clark Cougar fans stayed on the edge of their seats all night, but in the end they left the Mules out in the rain as the team took a narrow 14-13 win over Alamo Heights and boosted their season record to 2-0. The rainy, hard fought victory featured gutsy performances by quarterback Hayden Greenbauer, running back Ryan Jones and all their friends on the offensive line. Check out a rundown on the action in the Express-News. The pursuit of a district championship begins next week against Brandeis.

MATADORS OR DOOR MATS?

Junior RB Ryan Jones bulls past Matadors

Junior RB Ryan Jones bulls past Matadors

The season’s first football scrimmage involving the varsity, JV and freshman teams ended with mixed results, especially if you read local media reports.  As expected, the Clark varsity, who returned several starters from last year’s state semifinal team, looked good on defense along with some new faces in new places.  The offense also looked ready, scrimmaging without Senior quarterback Hayden Greenbauer, receiver Joe Vasquez, center Robert Chapman, OL Anker Wiggins as well as others.  Several starters from last year watched from the sideline as Sophomore QB Josh Kern guided the offense to a TD in a short game-like portion of the scrimmage with a pass to sophomore receiver Brandon Yates.  Both the JV and freshman teams also looked good in their portions of the scrimmage against the Seguin Matadors.

The Gazette-Enterprise of Seguin also watched the scrimmage.  Read what they had to say about it here.

Greenbauer running for the Ponies?

Hayden Greenbauer

Clark has been pegged as the favorite to take the District 28-5A title this year by at least two Texas football prognosticators. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine ranks the Cougars at #16 in its statewide preseason poll and tops in the district. Texas Football joins the website 5ATexasfootball.com in predicting an offensive MVP season for quarterback Hayden Greenbauer. While 5ATexasfootball.com has the Cougars at #25 in its preseason poll, the website expects a first place finish in the district race. 5A Texasfootball.com also predicts junior running back Ryan Jones will be 28-5A’s Newcomer of the Year.

Ranks Clark #25 in preseason list

5ATexasFootball.com has released their first ranking of the season and the Clark Cougar Football team cracks the list at #25 in the state.  Clark is one of only three Region 4 teams on the list.  Not entirely accurate (where is that guy? and why isn’t he playing?),  the article that accompanies it is a good read and great for diehard fans of the program.  You can find out more here.
