The Clark baseball and softball teams both experienced on Tuesday what has been rare this season – a loss. It’s the first one in district for baseball and only the second for softball and both only by the narrowest of margins.
The Cougars softball team just couldn’t get their bats fired up as Holmes got the one run they needed in the 4th inning to beat Clark 1-0. That happens to be the same score as their only other district loss, which was Taft in the first game of the season. Clark did have 6 hits to Holmes’ 4, but couldn’t muster the runs. The loss leaves them in 3rd place in district, but with the chance to make a statement and a push in the next two games as they play second place O’Connor on Thursday and first place Taft next Tuesday.
Clark Baseball recorded their first district loss this season, 5-4, in a tough game against Stevens. On the mound for the Cougars was Ryan Skowronski, who threw 4 complete innings, with 3 strike outs, 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs. Trevor Settles and Matt Cohen came in for relief. Stevens’ bats hit early, scoring 2 runs in the first inning of play. Clark finally got on board in the 3rd inning, with Hunter McFall’s single, scoring Jason Cervantes. Stevens came back in the 4th to score another 2 runs, Clark scored 2 in the 5th inning when Cervantes scored on a balk by the pitcher and Chad Dullnig’s single scored McFall. In the bottom of the 5th, Settles was able to hold off Stevens with 3 quick strike outs. The 6th inning was scoreless for both teams. In the 7th inning, Clark rallied to tie the game when Dullnig’s single scored Cervantes. Steven’s 1st batter of the 7th inning, hit a home run over the left field fence to give Stevens the win in this very tight District Game. Notable for Clark: Cervantes 4 hits and 3 runs, McFall 3 hits, Dullnig 2 hits and Cohen and Braden Mattson each had 1 hit. Next up for Clark, Johnson at 5:30pm this Thursday evening at NS. Next District game is against Holmes, Tue Mar 22 and 4:45.
