Jessica Rourke swims the 500m freestyle (20x!)

Jessica Rourke take 2nd in the 500m freestyle

The Clark Cougars held off a formidable Alamo Heights Mules swim team on Saturday for a win:   407 Clark – 280 AH.    Clark sprinters, distance swimmers, backstrokes, and IM’ers did very well in their first scored dual meet of the season.   In addition to the individual races, six different relays are swum at a meet:   200 yd. medley relay, 200 yd. free relay and 400 free relays, each having men’s and women’s races.   Of the 6 relays on Saturday, Clark “A” squad relays finished 1st place  in every one of them!    “B” squad relay swimmers  were right behind  “A”, and “C” relays, sometimes comprised of kids in their first swimming relay,  held their own!    Demonstrating, once again, that Clark Cougars stick together and know the meaning of  teamwork.

REVENGE IS BEST SERVED WITH AN 8-0 RECORD!

by on Oct.17, 2009, under Football

#27 Garcia and #24 Vasquez defend and intercept Warren

#24 Vasquez intercepts Warren. #27 Garcia would also steal one from Warren later

The Clark Cougars varsity football team, #1 in San Antonio, #11/21 in Texas (Dave Campbell/5ATexasfootball.com) exacted a bit of revenge on the Warren Warriors with a 27-17 victory.  The win gave the Cougars an 8-0 record, perfect in play this season.  Last season Warren ended the Cougars’ win streak at 7.

The Warriors scored first with an opening drive that resulted in a field goal and 3 point lead.  On the first possession for the Cougars,  a five play drive ended with Hayden Greenbauer scoring from 5 yds. out to give the Cougars a 7-3 1st qtr. score.  Joe Vasquez would get the ball back for the Cougars with an athletic interception with 4:02 left in the 1st qtr.  That would set up a Webb Williams 23 yd. field goal to give the Cougars a 7 point lead with a little over 11 minutes to play in the half.  The Cougars weren’t done with the end zone, however, as Joey Cammer tacked on a 1 yd. rushing TD with 5 minutes left in the half.  When both teams left the field, Clark had a 17-3 lead.

In the 2nd half, Clark would turn over the opening kickoff, giving Warren a chance to get back in it, converting it for a TD but still trailing 17-10.  A second Clark fumble gave Warren life but the defense held and Clark  took over.  A nine play drive would set up another Webb Williams field goal, this time a 45 yd. effort, giving Clark a 20-10 lead going into the 4th qtr.

SUB-VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAMS WRECK WARRIORS, OTHER COUGARS

by on Oct.16, 2009, under Football

Both JV and freshmen teams took care of business and defeated the Warren Warriors on the gridiron.

In an extra long JV game, thanks to some unique clock management techniques by Warren students, Brian Socha started the scoring early.  On the Cougars 2nd offensive play from the Clark 13, Brian Socha blew past Warren for a 87 yd. run up the middle, virtually untouched thanks to some great blocking by the offensive line.  In the 2nd quarter, Sean Campbell turned a bootleg left into a 45 yd. TD to make it 14-0.  In the 3rd quarter, Alex Hunter added to the Warriors misery with a 2 yd. reception from Campbell to make it 21-0 and in the 4th, Kweku Larbie would represent the “2’s” with a score to make it 28-0.  Warren threatened late to score but a stiff defensive stand, that at one point was on the 1/2 yd. line, denied the Warriors a taste of the end zone and preserved the shutout for the Cougars.

The sophomores took on New Braunfels Canyon and won 28-6 including a defensive TD by Aaron Rodriguez.

The freshman A team beat Warren 14-8 and the B team gave the Warriors a beat down with a 30-0 victory.

Clark takes on Alamo Heights this Saturday at the Josh Davis Natatorium at 8:30 am.

This will be the first dual meet of the 2009-2010 season.   Clark swimmers have participated in the Northside Pentathlon and the Class meet already this season.   Both events are non-scoring meets and allow swimmers to get baseline times for the season.   Clark has been training hard for 7 weeks now, and are expecting a competitive AH team to show up on Saturday.  Come cheer for Clark swimming on Saturday morning!

COUGAR BOWL I – CLARK SOPHS BEAT UP NB CANYON, 28-6

by on Oct.15, 2009, under Football

With “Go Cougars” being yelled by the opposing fans and signs for “Aristocats,” you can’t blame the Clark parents for being a little confused. However, the Clark Cougars took care of business beating the NB Canyon Cougars 28-6.
After a scoreless first quarter, Alex Ethridge (#24) started the scoring with a 2 yard power run at the goal line and then added a 20 yard sprint to the endzone. Ethridge appeared to have scored on a defensive take away. After the officials signaled touchdown, the NB Canyon coaches indicated he stepped out of bounds. The officials then reversed their call and awarded Clark the ball at the spot of the take away. Another possible defensive score was not awarded to Clark after the Canyon quarterback should’ve been called for intentional grounding in the end zone.
Clark was finally able to get a defensive score after Malcom Eatman (#41) stripped the ball from the quarterback and Aaron Rodriguez (#25) recovered the ball in the end zone.
Dusty Wright finished off the scoring with a 30 yard run, receiving excellent blocking from the offensive line.
Next up for the Sophs, a game with Steele on Thursday at 5 pm at Clark.

CLARK DEFENSE HONORED

Clark "D"

Clark "D"

Following their 3rd shutout of the season, the Clark defensive unit was recognized with a “Game Ball” in the SA Express News. The “D” held O’Connor to -4 yards rushing after holding Jay to 50 yards rushing the week before. Clark also posted shutouts against Jay and Churchill.  In the seven games played this season the Cougar defense has given up only 55 points. Clark held on to its #1 ranking overall in the Express-News and KSAT-12 and moved up to #10 in the state in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football poll.

Warren is next. Friday night 7:30 at Farris. Be there! GO COOGS!
