Greenbauer hammers Wagner

For the 7th time this season, the Clark Cougar defense has held a team to under 100 yds.rushing and shut down a premier running back. San Antonio rushing leader David Glasco never got his jets started and the result provided a 17-10 win over District 27-5A runner up Wagner Thunderbirds in a bi-district playoff game.

Hayden Greenbauer and the offense took it from there and hammered, hammmered, hammered the overmatched T’birds.  The fun began on the opening kickoff.  Clark kicked to Wagner and Glenn Bonner stripped the ball from the Wagner runner to set up the Cougars on offense.  The hammering began with heavy doses of Greenbauer left, right, and up the middle and at the 6:33 mark of the 1st qtr. Hayden to0k it in from the 1 for a 7-0 lead.

In the 2nd qtr., the defense forced a punt from Wagner.  Joey Cammer blew past his defender to block the punt, setting up the next Cougar points.  Greenbauer would score again at the 9:58 mark with a 5 yd. run.  Wagner would strike back quickly with a 56 yd. pass TD on the following possession.  Webb Williams kicked a 30 yd. FG to make it 17-7 Clark. On the next Wagner drive, Joey Cammer once again delivered a HUGE hit on third down to force Wagner into a FG of its own to send the teams into halftime with Clark leading 17-10.

In the 3rd qtr., it was defense and penalties that kept the scoreboard from moving.

In the fourth qtr., the Cougars controlled the ball once again, converting three 4th downs before losing the ball on a fumble inside the ten yard line.  Wagner got the ball back and began a throwing frenzy with less than 2 minutes left on the clock but once again, the defense stepped up and delivered the ball back to Greenbauer for the victory formation to win the game.

Jr. running back Ryan Jones returned to the lineup with several good rushes as well.  Greenbauer carried the ball 37 times in the game.  The defense held Wagner to 4 first downs.  The Clark offense possessed the ball for over 36 of the 48 minutes of the game.

Next up is the Austin Bowie Bulldogs, Friday evening in the Alamodome at 7:30pm.  They defeated 26-5A Roosevelt to advance.  Bowie was 7-3 in the regular season and lost to Westlake, Austin High and Austin Anderson.
