Hard Fought Season Opener for Clark Mens Soccer 2-1, Clark

by on Jan.21, 2014, under Soccer, Winter Sports

The Clark men beat O’Connor, 2-1, in their season opener at Northside Fields tonight. Jake Peterson, #10, scored for Clark midway through the first half with O’Connor’s goal following shortly after when Clark inadvertently tapped one into their own net. Shortly before the end of the first half, Andre Garcia, #2, put another one in the net, giving Clark the advantage going into the half.

The second half play was fast and furious, with the O’Connor captains contesting several of the referee’s calls, and several players on both sides getting injured. After one aggressive play, the referee gave a yellow card to O’Connor. The Clark men kept up the pressure, taking several shots on goal, but were unable to put another one in the net. O’Connor’s offense, led by their #10, were unable to get past the Clark defense, leaving Clark the victor with a 2-1 final.

The next mens game is 7 pm on Friday, January 24th, at Farris Stadium.

by on Aug.22, 2013, under Soccer

In addition to playing football and soccer for Clark, Tristan Cavazos, a junior, also plays club soccer for the Lonestars Premier team.  With his persistence and speed as a left back defender, his team beat teams from Austin, El Paso and Houston for the 2013 US Youth Soccer State Cup Championship for the second year in a row.  They went on to represent Texas in the USYS Region III Championship held in OK.

Most recently, they won the 2013 Surf Cup, the premier summer showcase tournament for youth soccer, held in San Diego, CA.  With only 13 players (2 subs), they beat teams with full rosters from TX, NY, WA, CA and Canada, earning them the honors of being the first team from Texas to win a Surf Cup Championship.

SOCCER TEAMS POST WINS OVER JAY

by on Mar.15, 2013, under Soccer

Two great victories for Clark soccer on Tuesday as the girls and boys teams rebounded from losses late last week.

The girls poured on the goals in a 9-0 win over Jay. Chloe Trevino and Hannah Jacobs had two goals a piece, while Alyssa Jacobs, Frances Moore, Jordan Leonard, Kendall Traa and Kallie Doherty each posted one goal.  The Cougars are 8-5-0 in district 27-5A and in sole possession of  4th place with three games remaining. One of those games is today against Marshall. A victory by Marshall would create a tie for the 4th and last playoff position. Clark beat Marshall 2-1 in their first meeting this season. The game starts at 5:00 at Northside field 1.

On the boys side:

Clark toppled Jay at Gus Stadium, winning 3-0 on a beautiful afternoon. The first goal came 20 minutes in from a penalty kick by Clark senior Manolo Garcia (#1) and Clark held Jay 1-0 til the half. At the 55th minute, #16, sophomore Matt Jacobs put the ball in the net from 40 yards out, bringing the spectators to their feet. In the last few minutes, #6, senior Jaron Pineda moved onside from an offside position and then beat his opponent to the ball. He then passed the ball to #17, senior Chemo Elizondo, for the third Clark goal of the game. The officials awarded one yellow card on Jay and one yellow card each to Cougars junior John Cintron (#3), and junior Angus Moir (#4). Each of the Clark men played hard and it was good to see #10, freshman Jake Peterson, back on the pitch.
Awesome win for the Cougars! The results put Clark in second place, with Brandeis holding the #1 position in the district. They play next on Friday against Marshall. The game will be at 7 pm, Northside field #1

ROUGH NIGHT FOR CLARK SOCCER

by on Mar.09, 2013, under Soccer

Two exciting games for the Cougars on Friday, unfortunately they didn’t end well for Clark.
In the girls game Clark and Brandeis were tied 0-0 at the half and for much of the second half. Brandeis scored their first goal midway through the last half and was quickly matched by a successful Clark penalty kick by senior Alyssa Jacobs. The Broncos picked up steam, however, scoring another 4 goals before the game finished, 5-1. The Cougars are tied for 4th place with Marshall and will be fighting for that playoff spot during the last four games of the season. Clark  plays Jay on Tuesday, March 12, at Gus stadium, 7 pm. Go get ’em Coogs!
The Clark boys played hard last night at Northside #2, losing an intensely physical game against Brandeis. The Broncos’ goal came early in the second half and they successfully held Clark for the rest of the game. The referee called yellow cards against two Brandeis players and one against Clark junior John Cintron, #3. The Clark team was focused and fierce but the Brandeis keeper successfully blocked every shot.
It was Clark’s second defeat to Brandeis this season, with both games being extremely competitive. If the two teams face off again, it will be in the playoffs. In the district standings, Brandeis is now in first place, Jay in second and Clark in third. However, Brandeis and Jay have 3 games left, Clark has 4; Brandeis and Jay have yet to play their second game against each other. All of this will make for an interesting finish to the season.
Clark faces Jay on Tuesday, March 12, at Gus stadium, 5 pm. Go Coogs!

CLARK ROLLS OVER TAFT

by on Mar.02, 2013, under Soccer

The Clark boys and girls soccer teams took care of business against Taft on Friday winning big in both games. The girls won after playing a tight first half which ended with the Cougars ahead 2-1. Clark added three goals in the second half to come away with a whopping 5-1 victory. It’s a significant win with the Raiders just ahead of Clark in the district standings. As usual the Cougars spread the scoring around with goals from Blair Socha, Alyssa Jacobs, Monique Rempel, Chloe Trevino and Lexi Platz. Frances Moore came up with two assists along with one each from Cindi Duke, Socha and Trevino.  Clark’s district record is now 7-4-0 and 11-7-2 for the season.

CCS received details of the boy’s 3-0 victory over Taft from Caryn Moir:

Clark men rolled over Taft Friday night at the Northside fields, but the game was close until the final 10 minutes. Senior Manolo Garcia (#1) scored for Clark midway through the first half and the Cougars held the Taft Raiders until halftime despite aggressive play. The second half started in the same way, with Taft playing hard. Both teams had a chance to show off their passing skills but Clark held off the Raiders while trying to score again. Clark’s second goal came when #8, senior Garrett Berry assisted #6, senior Jaron Pineda, with putting it in the net. Shortly after that, #17, senior Chimo Elizondo, scored the Coogs’ final goal, sealing the win for Clark. As always, the win was a team effort with keeper Preston Campbell creatively blocking a shot despite the stadium lights making it hard to see the ball. Taft took their shot and keeper Campbell, a junior, nabbed the ball and held it outside of the goal despite momentum carrying his body past the goal line. Number 2, junior Andre Garcia, #4, junior John Cintron and #18, junior Chris Pantaleon, played hard, helping keep offensive pressure on the Raiders. Clark’s aggressive play resulted in two yellow cards, on #1, Manolo Garcia and #4, junior Angus Moir.
Both teams have open dates on March 5th and will play again on March 8th against Brandeis at  Northside field #1. The girls play at 5:00 and the boys at 7:00.
Way to go COOGS!!!

CLARK WHIPS WARREN – TWICE

by on Feb.20, 2013, under Soccer

It was a good night for Cougar soccer on Tuesday with the boys and girls teams both posting wins. The Clark girls got off to a strong start in their 3-1 victory scoring all three goals in the opening half. Scoring for the Cougars were Alyssa Jacobs, Chloe Trevino and Lexi Platz. Platz also had a assist along with Erica Rempel and Bridgett Sumner.  The win brings their district record to 5-3-0 and 9-6-2 for the season. They’re in 4th place in district, with the second half of district play about to begin.

Next up is 3rd place O’Connor on Friday at 5:00pm at Northside #1.

In the boys game:

Clark shut out the Warriors despite Warren’s strong passing game. Clark’s first goal came early in the first half when Jaron Bustillo-Pineda (#6) put the ball in the goal with an assist from Gus Moir (#4). The team held Warren at 1-0 until the last few minutes of the game, when Fernando Maya (#7) scored. Prior to Tuesday’s game, Clark was fifth in the district standings but moved up to second place with the win. Way to go, Clark!
The next game, Clark v O’Connor, is Friday, 7 pm, at Northside, #1.

CLARK BOYS FIGHT TO A DRAW WITH HOLMES

by on Feb.18, 2013, under Soccer

Fifth ranked Clark tied tenth ranked Holmes Friday at Northside.  Many thanks to the family and friends who toughed the cold winds and freeway noise to cheer on our teams (men & women)! The play on the field was aggressive, with the ref raising a yellow card against a Holmes player.  Clark had many shots on goal and the Holmes keeper should be credited with keeping the score at zero. In return, Holmes had a few interesting shots but Clark’s keeper only had one serious ball to contend with. Youngsters Jake Peterson and Enrique Aleman played with heart and sophomores Tristan Cavazo and Matt Jacobs played well, moving the ball at critical moments. Garrett Berry subbed in and did an awesome job in his position. While Coach Rule was understandably frustrated at the half (due to being scoreless), the team passed the ball well and kept up the pressure in spite of playing into the wind during the second half. Clark’s next game is against Warren, again at Northside #2 at 5:00pm Tuesday.
