YOUR HELP NEEDED AND REQUESTED

As you may or may not know, private schools are proposing a change to Texas state law allowing private schools (who can recruit and choose their athletes) to compete on the same level as public schools.  The Texas Senate has already passed the law and it now moves to the house.

The Texas High School Coaches Association feels that this gives private schools an overwhelming advantage.  To find out more information and ways to contact your representative, please continue reading.

SOFTBALL READY FOR PLAYOFFS

For the 4th year in a row the Clark softball team is heading into the playoffs. The Cougars finished 3rd in district and will face East Central in a best of three series. The schedule looks like this:

Game 1 – Friday, April 29 – 7:00 @ Northside Field 1

Game 2 – Saturday, April 30 – 12:00 noon @ East Central HS

Game 3 – if necessary – 30 minutes after game 2

Make plans to attend and cheer the girls on!

A NIGHT TO CELEBRATE – GET YOUR TICKETS!

Tickets on sale now!

The 2010-11 Clark Varsity Athletic Banquet is drawing near and tickets sales are happening now. This year’s celebration will be held at University United Methodist Church on DeZavala Road near Clark on May 10th beginning at 6:00 with a mix and mingle. The program, with emcee Jay Tope, will begin at 6:30.

Of course all varsity athletes will receive their complimentary ticket from their coaches. Tickets for parents and dates can be purchased at Clark for $25 during one of the lunchtime sales dates on April 20, 21, 28 and 29.  Remaining tickets will be sold at the door that evening for $30. Barboza leads Cougars

Clark soccer midfielder Oscar Barboza is in the spotlight this week.  Roving reporter Pat Turner of the San Antonio Express News Community section highlights the senior’s talent and quiet leadership for the district leading Cougars in this article.

Up next for soccer is Stevens on Friday at the Northside fields. Girls play at 5:00 and boys at 7:00.

HEAVY LIFTING

Clark Lift-a-thon

The 18th annual Lift-A-Thon, sponsored by the Clark Texas Football Club, was another huge success. With a packed house of enthusiastic Cougar fans  the Lift-A-Thon provided an exciting look at the strength of next season’s Varsity and Junior Varsity squads.  Several players exceeded their personal best records. Among those still standing in the plus 300’s at the end were  Roger Lamar (jr),  Charles  Quichocho (jr)  and the DeHart brothers – William (soph) and Blake (jr). (continue reading…)

CLARK SHUTS DOWN O’CONNOR

#21 Kyle Rutledge

The Clark boys basketball team dominated the hardwood in a 49-33 victory over O’Connor. The Panthers managed to score only 6 points in the first half to Clark’s 20. Ansley Benjamin and Adam Perez each had 15 points for the Cougars while Kyle Rutledge added 9. With an 11-3 record Clark is in 2nd place in District 27-5A. They take on the first place Taft Raiders on Saturday at 1:30 at Paul Taylor.

GAMES CANCELED; MOVED

NISD has announced that today’s games have been canceled and rescheduled.  No JV or Freshman games take place tomorrow. Here is the explanation from NISD:

Athletic Events for for Feb. 4 and 5:
-All athletic events have been canceled for Friday, February 4th.
-All sub-varsity events have been canceled for Saturday, February 5th.
-All Varsity events  will be played as scheduled on Saturday, February 5th.
-All Varsity Basketball canceled Friday, February 4th, have been Rescheduled for Saturday, February 5th
-All Varsity Soccer canceled Friday, February 4th, will be made up this next week – tba.
-Any scheduled practices for Saturday will be permitted.

OLD MAN WINTER 1, CLARK 0

Mr. Freeze put up an inch of ice and some snow, grounding the Cougars.  The student section, in a rare moment that no one can recall since 1986, rooted for the Flakes throughout the night.

CONDOLENCES

The wife of former Clark assistant football and baseball coach, Tony Sledge, passed away this week in San Antonio. Jenifer Sledge, 27,  died on Thursday afternoon following a lifelong battle with Cystic Fibrosis. Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 3:00 at the Gruene United Methodist Church in New Braunfels.  More details here.

Coach Sledge was with Clark Athletics for 3 years before taking a job as an assistant football coach at New Braunfels Canyon High School in 2010.
