On to Regional meet for these Coogs

Early morning temps in the mid-40’s required the Cross Country team to bundle up as they headed to Hardin Athletic Complex for this year’s District meet on Saturday, Oct 30th.  It had moved into the 50’s when the Varsity Girls took off at 9am – perfect running weather for the first two of four Cougars that qualified for the Regional Meet, as the top 10 individuals and 3 teams move on.  Glynnis Meade finished 4th in 12:04.7 and Shantel Swift 7th in 12:27.3.  The Varsity Boys race was neck and neck most of the way between Austin Wells and a runner from O’Connor.  With just over 100m to go, they bumped slightly and Austin fell, but he popped back up to hold on to 2nd place in 15:43.3.  Ryan Pavlich placed 7th in 16:45 to round out our Regional qualifiers.  The Girls team finished 6th and the Boys were 5th overall.  Next week’s meet is at Brooks City Base, with the 5A Girls running at 11:40am and the Boys at Noon.  Come cheer our Cougars on!

VICTORY!

Menezes steals one

After a week off the gridiron, the Clark Cougar football team came roaring back, demolishing the Holmes Huskies 56-27 in a homecoming victory.  The win keeps the Cougars in the playoff hunt with a must-win game against O’Connor next week.

Holmes’ first possession ended early when they were stopped on a 4th and 8 attempt from the Clark 37 yd. line.  The Cougars drove to the five where Deandre Holmes scored giving the Cougars a 7-0 lead.  The Cougars’ second score came after a 4th and 2 effort by the Huskies.  On the next play, Josh Kern bullied his way for 37 yds. for a 14-0 lead.  And once again, the Huskies were stopped on a 4th down attempt.  Hunter Anderson pounded his way to the end zone giving Clark a 21-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

The 2nd quarter wasn’t much better for the Huskies.  Manny Menezes picked off a Holmes pass, returning the ball for 36 yds., setting up a Kern to Ansley Benjamin 12 yd. TD reception.  The score came with 14 seconds off the clock at the start of the quarter.  The final Cougar score of the half  came when Josh Kern ran for his second TD at the 4:18 mark.  Holmes would score with :35 seconds left before the half.  The teams went to the locker room with Clark up 35-7 at the half.

COUGARS LOSE SHOOTOUT WITH STEVENS

by on Oct.16, 2010, under Football

Holmes runs for over 200 yds.

Despite scoring 36 points and Deandre Holmes 200 + rushing yards, it wasn’t enough to hold off the Stevens Falcons as Clark lost its third district game by a score of 36-49.

It looked like the football gods would smile on the Cougars when Daniel Durke intercepted a Stevens pass on their opening drive.  One play later, Clark returned the favor with a fumble and Stevens put points on the board first, leading 7-0 at the 7:45 mark of the 1st qtr.  The Cougars responded with a heavy dose of Deandre Holmes, including a burst of 30 yds. on their opening drive.  Clark tied the game when #33 scored from 3 yds. out with a little over two minutes left in the quarter.

The 2nd quarter was won by Stevens.  Falcon QB Mykkele Thompson made it a 14-7 game with ten minutes left until halftime.  Clark’s next drive stalled on a 4th and 5 and Stevens scored on a 17 yd. TD with 3:14 left before half.  Clark’s next offensive play was another fumble and Stevens made the Cougars pay with another TD, this time a 32 yd. pass to take a 28-7 lead with just two and a half minutes left before halftime.  Clark turned to their 2 minute offense and the result was a Cougar touchdown.  Deandre Holmes once again got the call from 13 yds. out and the teams went to the locker rooms with Clark trailing Stevens 14-28.

COUGARS LOSE TO WARRIORS

by on Oct.10, 2010, under Football

A. Benjamin catches and runs for 52 yds.

A strong start by the Clark Cougars wasn’t enough to keep the Warren Warriors from winning in the Cougars fifth district game of 2010.  Warren won 17-14 giving the Cougars a 3-2 record in district and a 3-4 record overall.

In the 1st quarter, Warren took the opening kickoff and drove to the Cougar 11 yd. line, where the defense forced them into a field goal.  The attempt, however, was no good as Kris Patino got a hand on the ball as it went up.  The Cougars took over and drove 89 yds., converting a 4th and 1 at the Warren 8 before Deandre Holmes, who would gash the Warrior defense in the first half, scored from 1 yd. out giving Clark a 7-0 lead with 8:57 left to go in the half.  The Cougars scoring drive was their first possession of the game.

Warren’s next offensive possession resulted in a touchdown (which on video review – was not), tying the game at 7 with 3:20 left before the half. A 52 yd. Josh Kern to Ansley Benjamin reception set up the next Cougar score as Deandre Holmes took a 4 yd. run around the left for a Clark 14-7 lead going into halftime.  In the first half, each team only had the ball twice.

VOLLEYBALL ON TOP OF DISTRICT

by on Oct.05, 2010, under Volleyball

Booker digs Cougars' win

Before the start of the game between the #9 Clark Cougars and Brandeis, first place in District 27-5A was a crowded field.  The Cougars, Broncos and O’Connor all could claim rights to district leader.  When the game ended, only Clark and O’Connor remained thanks to a 3-0 sweep of the Broncos.  The 3-0 win gives the Cougars 9 straight sets without a loss.

E’sjah Booker and Marcella Arellano each had 13 digs in the effort and Marcella added 12 kills.  Jennifer  Garrett added another 11 kills and Adriana Christian had 13 assists.  Adriana had 2 block shots along with Tarah Wood’s 3.

A good crowd showed up to see the Cougars win 25-18, 25-19 and 25-22.  It was the Cougars 9th win in a row and they are now 10-1 in district and 19-15 on the year.

WAY TO PLAY, LADIES!

VOLLEYBALL WINS #9, LOOKING FINE

by on Oct.02, 2010, under Volleyball

Kayci Murphy assists in win

The Clark Cougar varsity volleyball team began the second half of district play against Marshall and the outcome was the same as their first meeting – a 3-0 victory by the Cougars.  The victory gives Clark a 9-1 district record and share of first place.  It was also the Cougars ninth win in a row as they look ahead to one of the tougher teams in the district – Brandeis – on Tuesday.

The Cougars led by as much as 7 points in the first set, taking a 25-19 win.  In the second set, the Rams enjoyed a 6 point run to tie the score at 18, only to see the Cougars finish with a 7-2 run after a timeout to finish 25-20.  In the third set, Marshall actually led early for a moment, but then had to watch Clark reel off a 25-16 win to get the game win.

The Cougars are now 18-15 overall.
