A much improved Clark Cougar varsity football team scored often but had trouble stopping an Alamo Heights air attack, losing to the Mules 33-29. The Cougars are now 0-2 as they prepare for a district opener against Taft.
Alamo Heights struck first with a FG and then added 7 more points with 7 seconds left in the first quarter to take a 9-0 lead in what appeared to be the end of the quarter. Momentum, however, jumped to Clark’s side as Ryan Jones ended the 1st quarter with a 94 yard kickoff return. Going into the 2nd quarter, the score was 9-7 Alamo Heights.
The second quarter belonged to the Cougars, who scored two touchdowns but gave up another field goal and TD , the latter coming moments before halftime. Ryan Jones once again found the end zone and Deandre Holmes scored his first varsity TD with 1:43 left in the half. The Cougars went to the locker room with a 22-19 advantage.
The 2nd half Heights took the opening drive and looked ready to find the end zone again but the Clark defense stiffened, giving Josh Kern and the offense a chance to put Clark up by 10 with the quarter coming to a close, 29-19. Deandre Holmes scored the touchdown. Once again, the Mules kicked back, scoring with 18 seconds left in the quarter, closing the gap to 29-26 Clark.
In the 4th, Alamo Heights scored another TD and the Cougars had a chance to go ahead for the win but a 4th and 17 pass attempt was broken up, giving the ’09ers the win.
A tried and true Clark formula, hammering the opposing defense, gave Clark it’s first 100 yd. rushing back of the season in Deandre Holes with 103 yds. Ryan Jones accounted for 53 yards and Josh Kern ran for 42 yds.
