SOPHOMORE LINES DESERVE CREDIT

by on Oct.23, 2009, under Football

The Clark Sophomore football team is undefeated at 8-0 and has outscored their opponents 186-34. The main reasons for those numbers are the offensive and defensive lines. Whether it’s opening large holes for the running backs or the defensive forcing turnovers or punts to get the ball back for the offense, these two lines have been consistent all season.

It’s true the skilled positions get the headlines, but if anyone knows football, everything starts and ends with the two lines.

All season, the offensive line of William Carter (#54), Stuart Cram (#60), Cade Crozier (#56), Blake DeHart (#64), Kyle Magaro (#63) and Zachery Pieper (#53) have opened up holes big enough to drive a truck through.

On the defensive side, Stuart Cram (#60), Rogelio Lamar (#36), Jose “Manny” Martinez (#90), Charles “Cho Cho” Quichocho (#34), Mariano Rendon (#31) and Makeba Henderson (#5) have made numerous behind the line tackles and harassed quarterbacks.

The hard work done in the summer and in practice every week is paying off. These linemen, combined with the JV team, appear to be adding to the Clark tradition of dominant lines for the next couple of years.

Next week, we’ll spotlight the JV lines that have been doing the same en route to a 7-1 record.

Ethridge finds only puddle on field

The Clark Cougar sophomore JV team said night, Knights to Steele in this week’s lone football game at Clark.  A game fraught with fumbles (5 for Steele, 2 for Clark) contributed to the 18-6 victory for the undefeated Cougars.  The 1st quarter ended with neither team scoring, the result of each team committing their first fumbles.  In the second quarter, Clark capitalized on another Knight fumble with a 10 yd touchdown.  QB Nick Coons begin the play with a keeper up the middle.  As defenders wrapped him up, he was able to get the ball to Tri-Rice Van Buren who took the ball for 7 yds for the TD.  It was then Steele’s turn to get the ball which of course meant it was time for another fumble. On the kickoff, the returner for the Knight’s fumbled the ball which was picked up in mid-stride by Jeremy Sanchez who then sprinted to the end zone for Clark’s second TD.  The halftime score was Clark 12-Steele 0.

Jessica Rourke take 2nd in the 500m freestyle

The Clark Cougars held off a formidable Alamo Heights Mules swim team on Saturday for a win:   407 Clark – 280 AH.    Clark sprinters, distance swimmers, backstrokes, and IM’ers did very well in their first scored dual meet of the season.   In addition to the individual races, six different relays are swum at a meet:   200 yd. medley relay, 200 yd. free relay and 400 free relays, each having men’s and women’s races.   Of the 6 relays on Saturday, Clark “A” squad relays finished 1st place  in every one of them!    “B” squad relay swimmers  were right behind  “A”, and “C” relays, sometimes comprised of kids in their first swimming relay,  held their own!    Demonstrating, once again, that Clark Cougars stick together and know the meaning of  teamwork.
